Description

Scrapbook compiling newspaper clippings mostly featuring politicians, soldiers, obituaries, weddings, and other news from mainland Charlotte County, with a particular focus on those related to Dumbarton Parish.

On the first page, a clipping of an illustration Union Jack flag is inscribed with the words: “Jeannette Emersons / Book / Greenock / Dec 25th 1919.” Opposite, glued inside the front cover, is an illustration of a mill in Ontario. Clipped newspaper images of Charlotte County councilors surround both and continue into the next spread, which also includes newspaper images of King George V, Queen Mary, and the assembled group of the Charlotte County Municipal Council of 1906 [the CCA also holds an original print of this photograph: P163.2]. Following are nine pages of clipped images depicting named World War One soldiers, most—perhaps all—of whom are men from Charlotte County killed in the war. Related is a clipped image and letter sent to the St. Croix Courier from the front in 1915, depicting a group of soldiers posed with a cannon lettered in paint with “Scoodic NB.” More images of politicians follow, including Prime Minister Borden and Lt. Gov. Ganong, as well as a set of images of high school valedictorians in St. Stephen, Milltown, St. George, and St. Andrews.

The remainder of the scrapbook is filled principally with obituaries of individuals of all ages and marriage notices. Both cover locations across mainland Charlotte County, though a majority relate to Dumbarton Parish, including Rolling Dam, Greenock, Dumbarton, and Sorrel Ridge. Those with dates indicated range from 1916 to 1936. At least seven of the obituaries refer to deaths caused by the influenza pandemic of 1918-1920. Other notable incidents include the accidental railroad death of William Nicholas, a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe; the accidental deadly shooting of 15-year-old Norman O’Donnell in Old Ridge by his teenage friend; and the drowning of Leonard Chase, who was working as a cook for Lord and Lady Shaughnessy.

Other local news items are occasional, and include an image and report for the Greenock School in 1936; pictures of “Miss Milltown,” “Miss St. Stephen,” and “Miss Calais”; and an image of the new CPR station in St. Stephen. Clippings of world news include items on the murder of Charles Lindbergh’s son; the death of King George V and ascension of Edward VII; the Vimy Ridge Memorial; and the dedication of a Presbyterian Church in Virginia.

The scrapbook also includes a clipping of J. S. Lord, MLA for Charlotte County, participating in a Klu Klux Klan parade held in Hamilton. Lord was a highly visible member of this organization.

The inside of the back cover bears a hand-drawn pencil illustration of a farmhouse with cluttered yard and individuals labelled as “Mother,” “Father,” “Mary,” and “Going to Grandmother’s.”

The scrapbook is purpose-made, with the word “Scrap Book” inscribed on the front cover. Covers are pressed board with black cloth covering. The stapled pages are also black.
