Description

Scrapbook composed of newspaper clippings pasted into a repurposed book, mostly involving the residents of Elmsville, New Brunswick.

The base of the scrapbook is a 1911 book titled “Experimental Farms,” which has lost its covers. The majority of the clippings are columns reporting local social and personal items in the Saint Croix Courier. The places most represented are Elmsville and Lower Elmsville. Reports on meetings of the Elmsville Women’s Auxiliary and Elmsville Women’s Institute regularly appear. In addition to those on Elmsville, social and personal columns for other small Charlotte County communities are often included, including Bocabec, Bethel, Pleasant Ridge, Digdeguash, McMinn, and Lawrence Station.

Most other clipped items are obituaries and marriage notices, with subjects across Charlotte County. Longer obituaries include those of Dr. Henry Taylor of St. George; Rev. D. W. Blackall of the Parish of St. David, St. Patrick, and St. James; Dr. Vance Maxwell of St. George; and Adeline Van Horne. There are also several clippings on the accidental death of A. K. Blackwell, of St. Stephen, while stationed in England.

The occasional clippings in other categories include coverage of the murder of Bernice Connors; captioned images of St. Andrews valedictorians; a captioned image of a large log cut by Elmsville in 1941 (see P596.49); poems and song lyrics; and several articles on Raymond McQuoid (see MC 578).

Notes

This scrapbook came to the CCA with the name "Leila Johnstone, from Elmsville" attached, but no information could be found on an individual with that name. However, the CCA does hold material from "Lila Johnston" of Elmsville. It is probable the creator is in fact Lila Johnstone (later Lila Williamson and Lila Mowatt).
Digitization and description of this scrapbook was made possible in part by Library and Archives Canada’s Documentary Heritage Communities Program.
