Description

Fonds comprises documents principally relating to members of the Norris family of St. Andrews, kept in the Norris Family Bible. The Norris family was the only Black family resident in St. Andrews by the early 1900s. The fonds contains records of family marriages, births, baptisms, communions, confirmations, and deaths, with reference to Charles H. Norris, Maria E. Brickson, and their children Helen Maria Smith, Jessie Stewart, Charles Edward Gilbert, Clifford, Kittie (Kathleen), and John Cadman. Individuals from the Brickson family, namely Jessie A. Brickson and Edward Brickson, appear on the family record and through the presence of a tax receipt. Records of the deaths of Moses Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, George Stewart, Almira [indecipherable], and Helen Henderson are also included. The individual most prominently represented in the materials is John Cadman "Caddy" Norris, for whom various biographical records, a medical history sheet, and military exemption forms are present. Additional materials include a religious pamphlet by Reverend George Everard, instructions on supporting applications for military exemption, and a print of wounded soldier Gunner V. A. Walker on a stretcher in front of the Red Cross Hospital in Netley, England.
